Average Service Brunch
Tucked along the buzzing stretch of Jalan Besar, Average Service has quickly settled into the neighbourhood as an easygoing lifestyle spot that moves seamlessly from daytime café to evening dining destination. One year after opening, the space continues to evolve with an expanded menu that leans into comforting plates, playful flavours and a relaxed social vibe.
The interiors set the tone - warm lighting, an open kitchen bar and the restaurant’s signature sunken conversation pit create a space that encourages lingering. It feels equally suited for a casual brunch catch-up as it does for a laid-back dinner with drinks.
Our meal began on a fresh note with the Burratina & Tomato Salad, a simple yet satisfying starter where creamy burratina meets sweet marinated tomatoes and bright chimichurri.
Moving into heartier territory, the Seared Salmon Mentaiko Rice Bowl was a classic done right with the creamy mentaiko sauce adding a savoury richness, balanced by the fluffy Koshihikari rice.
The Dirty Nori Capellini with Tiger Prawns stood out with its umami-forward profile. Creamy yet briny from the nori and bonito, the thin capellini carried the flavours well while the tiger prawns added a sweet seafood note that tied everything together.
One of the highlights was the Slow Cook Beef Cheeks with Creamy Mash. Braised until fork-tender in red wine, the beef cheeks were deeply flavourful and paired beautifully with velvety mashed potatoes and rich jus.
Desserts remain one of Average Service’s more playful signatures. A fun addition is the Sourdough “Fries” with Trio Foam Dip, a quirky dessert featuring crisp sourdough sticks paired with matcha, strawberry and maple sea salt foams.
Drinks are equally central to the experience. Coffee and matcha anchor the daytime menu, with creative options like dalgona matcha and hojicha lattes made using premium powders from Niko Neko. As evening approaches, the focus shifts to cocktails such as the Tipsy Tiramisu, a dessert-inspired mix of espresso and Kahlua, or the floral Flower Boogie 2.0.
