Furano Cheese Factory — Hokkaido

Furano Cheese Factory — Hokkaido

We arrived at Furano Cheese Factory in the late afternoon, just as the day was winding down. The grounds were noticeably quieter, with the soft golden light casting a calm, almost pastoral atmosphere over the complex. Although we have missed the final pizza service and the hands-on workshops which include cheese and butter-making sessions, the visit still proved worthwhile.

The retail space remained open, offering a concise yet well-curated selection of house-made cheeses crafted from locally sourced Furano milk. Sampling was available, allowing for an unhurried appreciation of the different profiles - from mild, creamy varieties to slightly firmer cheeses with a deeper, savoury finish. The quality was evident: clean flavours, balanced salt levels, and a freshness that reflects Hokkaido’s strong dairy heritage.

We tried their fresh milk, which was rich yet remarkably smooth, with a natural sweetness that required no embellishment. It was a simple product, but one that beautifully showcased the strength of the region’s dairy.

We also tried their cheesecake, and loved it! Delicately set with a soft, airy texture, it carried a gentle tang from the cheese that balanced its subtle sweetness. It was refined rather than heavy, allowing the dairy notes to take centre stage without being overly rich. Elegant and understated, it was the kind of dessert that lingers pleasantly on the palate and leaves you wishing you had taken more home.

While arriving close to closing time meant missing some of the more interactive elements, the visit still offered a meaningful glimpse into Furano’s dairy craftsmanship. For those seeking the full experience, arriving earlier in the day would allow time for the wood-fired pizzas and workshops. Nevertheless, even a brief stop provides a tasteful introduction to one of Furano’s most charming local establishments.
