Lake Hill Farm — Toyako, Hokkaido
Paid a visit to Lake Hill Farm in the Toyako region, where the landscape immediately sets the tone for an amazing start to a brand new day. Perched on a hill overlooking Lake Tōya, with clear views of Mount Yōtei in the distance, the scenery feels almost cinematic and remarkably serene.
Approximately two hours from Sapporo or New Chitose Airport, it offers a refreshing departure from the city. The landscape feels expansive and restorative - rolling pastures stretch wide beneath open skies, the air is crisp and bracing, and a quiet, pastoral stillness lingers - the kind that naturally slows your pace and invites you to savour the moment.
As a working dairy farm, Lake Hill Farm is best known for its exceptionally fresh milk and house-made dairy creations.
Of course we had to try the fresh milk which was really fresh and lightly sweet, and the house-made pudding which was silky with a gentle caramel finish.
For the soft-serve, we got the double-flavour - cheese and milk, which showcased the best of Hokkaido’s dairy. Crafted from milk produced by their own cows, it was smooth with a clean, natural sweetness, while the cheese added a subtle savoury depth that made each bite more layered and nuanced.
The true highlight for us was the milk pie! Its pastry golden and flaky, encasing a luscious, milky filling that was rich yet refined. It struck that perfect balance between buttery and light, making it indulgently addictive.
I had hoped to try their cream puffs as well, but they were still baking during my visit - perhaps a reason to return?
Beyond desserts, the café offers light savoury options such as pizza. A small retail corner features handmade cheeses, jams and local confectionery, ideal for bringing a taste of the region home.
What stood out most, was the atmosphere. The open fields, panoramic lake views and the occasional sighting of farm animals create a pastoral calm that feels authentic rather than curated. It is less about elaborate attractions and more about simple pleasures done well - fresh produce, scenic surroundings and a slower rhythm of life.
