London Fat Duck - Wagyu of Ducks
Duan Wu Jie has always been one of those festivals that feels deeply rooted in comfort and tradition - from the ritual of eating bak zhang to gathering around the table with family over rich, celebratory dishes. I really liked that London Fat Duck approached their seasonal Duan Wu Jie menu with that same sense of warmth and nostalgia.
Their $98++ set feels like an elevated Cantonese family feast built around the spirit of the rice dumpling festival:
🌟Signature Rice Dumpling
Packed with their famous roast duck, crispy pork belly, conpoy, dried shrimp and a luscious salted egg yolk, every bite feels dense with savoury umami. The duck adds a deeper roasted flavour compared to traditional bak zhang, while the pork belly gives that satisfying fatty richness without becoming overly greasy.
🍎Double Boiled Apple and Melon Soup Delicate and clean-tasting, with a natural sweetness that cuts through the richness of the dumpling.
🫜Pickled Seasonal Vegetables
The sour plum acidity refreshes the palate and stops the meal from feeling too one-dimensional. Honestly, after the rich dumpling and duck, the crunchy pickles became oddly addictive.
🦆Herbal London Duck
The herbal marinade wasn’t overpowering or medicinal; instead, it gave the duck a warm, layered savouriness that reminded me a little of herbal roast meats you’d find in older-school Cantonese restaurants. The duck itself remained juicy, which is crucial.
🌽Salted Egg Prawn with Corn
Sweet corn and creamy salted egg sauce are already a dangerous combination, and the prawns carried the flavours well without being drowned in sauce.
🦆London Peking Duck
Of course we had to add on this signature dish because a visit to London Fat Duck hardly feels complete without it. The skin was beautifully crisp with that satisfying thin crackle, while the meat remained tender underneath. Wrapped with the condiments and pancake, it had that classic balance of sweet, savoury and smoky flavours that makes Peking duck so addictive in the first place. It also ended up being a nice contrast to the herbal duck - one richer and more aromatic, the other cleaner and focused on the duck’s natural roasted flavour.
